Is anyone else worried about tonight’s game at Wembley? I have a ticket and I am sure Gareth Southgate will not choose the team I want to see.
Frankly it is a thankless task he has and not everyone will like his starting eleven. We are not party to what he is seeing in training or the dressing room. However, here’s how I see it…
My captain first. I have no problem with Henderson or Kane but Kane is a certain starter, Henderson is not and that should decide the long term choice. Joe Hart is out of form and I like Jack Butland, who should have played v Malta and here.
Centre backs: Keane and Maguire my long term choice but Cahill’s experience and organisation skills will help against a savvy Slovakia and Jones looks different class under Mourinho this season. Stones not even considered.
Full backs, Walker and Bertrand with Dier protecting defence.
Kane must start with Rashford, who looks electric this season and will soon be as big physically as Lukaku but quicker.
With Henderson, Alli will play at 10 and how I wish Lallana was available. He is key to opening up a stubborn defence. Please no more Raheem Sterling, talented but does not deliver. I would not play Oxlade- Chamberlain in that midfield either. Danny Wellbeck for me is far more disciplined and scores more and choosing him in a 4-3-3 would signify attacking intent for a crowd desperate to be entertained. Jesse Lingard is also a big match player who is clever.
Southgate will probably play safe and he knows a 1-0 win will suit, virtually guaranteeing qualification, but given the lack of invention and creativity against Malta are we confident? No, me neither!
